The construction of the Cambria Hotel Downtown Detroit during the COVID-19 pandemic stands as a testament to resilience and innovation in the face of unprecedented challenges. Located at 600 W. Lafayette Blvd, this adaptive reuse project not only added a 154-room modern luxury hotel and 30,000 sq ft of event space to Downtown Detroit but also demonstrated the adaptability and determination of the construction industry during a global crisis.
Designed by world-renowned architect Albert Kahn and opened in 1936 as the home of WWJ Radio, the goal was to transform a historic building into a state-of-the-art hotel, offering a blend of contemporary design and the rich cultural heritage of Detroit. The project was significant for the city, promising to boost tourism and provide a new venue for both business and leisure travelers.
The original design of the building included multiple recording and broadcasting studios, office space, and a live performance auditorium. We were able to adapt these areas into restaurants and event spaces as well as add on a 175-vehicle parking garage and modularly built hotel (the first of its kind in Metro Detroit).
When COVID-19 struck in early 2020, it disrupted industries worldwide, and construction was no exception. The Cambria Hotel project faced numerous obstacles, including supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, and stringent health and safety regulations. These challenges necessitated a complete overhaul of the project’s timeline and approach.
Despite the challenges, the construction of the Cambria Hotel Downtown Detroit was completed successfully. The project, initially slated for completion in late 2022, faced inevitable delays but managed to open its doors in mid-2023. The final product is a modern, luxurious hotel that pays homage to Detroit’s roots while offering top-notch amenities and services to its guests.
The completion of the Cambria Hotel during the pandemic had a positive impact on the local economy. It created jobs during the construction phase and continues to provide employment opportunities in the hospitality sector.
The construction of the Cambria Hotel Downtown Detroit is a remarkable story of perseverance and innovation. Cambria Detroit is the perfect blend of modern construction while paying homage to Detroit architecture. The hotel and event center features 154 guest rooms, fine dining at Cibo Modern Mediterranean, fast casual dining at Detroit Taco Bodega, golf simulators at Five Iron Golf, ballrooms, lounges, & a rooftop bar overlooking Detroit. Cambria Detroit is the premiere luxury experience hotel that stands as a beacon of progress in Detroit.
